  • Kyle Evans - CDFW Environmental Program Manager, Anadromous & Inland Fisheries, Southern Calif.—What are Steelhead, where they live, life history, why they are important.
  • Nakia Zavalla, Cultural Director, Santa Ynez Band - Chumash Indians - their relationship to steelhead over centuries, and their cultural connection to the fish - past & present.

The Goals of Our Steelhead Campaign & Community Presentation

  1. To tell the story of steelhead in our Santa Barbara region, from its long history with indigenous peoples thousands of years ago, to their current near extinction existence.
  2. To help residents understand that this fishery is one to be cherished and protected for their beauty, complexity & unique life history.
  3. To inform the Santa Barbara community about their role in the effort to prevent extinction, and begin the recovery of steelhead.
  4. To demonstrate that the solutions for steelhead recovery are in our hands, and it’s up to us to protect this iconic species.
  5. To show the people of Santa Barbara County what a recovery project looks like.
  6. To ask people to sign up and help us push for steelhead recovery in our region.
